Hydrating serum for nails and cuticles: development and pharmaceutical evaluation

Abstract

Alterations in the structure of nails and cuticles can impair the functionality of the ungual region and negatively affect quality of life. Proper hydration of the nail plate and periungual skin is essential in the management of conditions such as brittle nail syndrome, onychoschizia, and onychorrhexis. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a hydrating serum for nails and cuticles. The formulation included hydroxyethylcellulose, propylene glycol, glycerin, disodium EDTA, methylparaben, purified water, urea, dexpanthenol, and allantoin. The final product met established quality parameters regarding appearance, color, odor, tactile sensation, density, homogeneity by centrifugation, and pH. The results suggest that the formulation offers hydrating and regenerative potential for topical application to nails and cuticles, representing a promising option for daily ungual and periungual care.
