Abstract

The present article focuses around the conceptual aspects and neurobiology of the ability of emotional regulation. In front of the fact that in the DSM V, the emotional dysregulation is present in a wide class of mental disorders, identify emotion regulation strategies and their evidence at the neurobiological level become relevant aspects to be understood. The aim is to identify the contributions of emotional regulation as a mechanism of psychological change and the possibilities implications for the clinical activity. A literature review was conducted with search realized in the database of Periódicos Capes, using the descriptors: Emotional Regulation AND conceptual aspects and Emotional Regulation AND neurobiology. The temporal cut was from 1994-2022. In conclusion, the literature evidences that dysfunctional strategies of emotional regulation are present in psychiatric disorders and that individual differences such as environmental, personality and cognitive profile factors can influence the preference for implementing strategies. It’s possible to conclude that the implementation of emotional regulation strategies that are sensitive to the context can get influence in the remission of symptoms of psychiatric disorders and that neural changes accompany psychological change, as well as there are also brain areas that signal the response to treatment. In addition, between the strategies, the one with the highest levels of evidence is reappraisal.
