Abstract

Currently, several furniture industries use water-based adhesives to bond their substrates, however these adhesives present major inconveniences such as slow drying, sales only through import and/or national distributors, need to use masks with filters for organic vapors due to the soot that comes from the application of the adhesive by spray, delay in the production line due to the waiting time for drying and packaging. Due to this, there is a great need in the current market to develop a PSA hot melt adhesive - Pressure Sensitive Adhesives, to replace the currently used water-based adhesives. An alternative is adhesives based on block copolymers (SIS and SBS thermoplastic rubbers) due to the good sensitivity to touch and stability after gluing that these copolymers provide to the adhesive. Four formulations were made with different amounts of SIS and SBS rubbers and tests such as viscosity, softening point, touch sensitivity analysis - tack, adhesion and cohesion to the substrate were carried out to verify which is the best composition of SIS and SBS rubbers in the formulation. The results showed that the best hot melt adhesive formulation for the application in question was the one composed of 5% SIS rubber and 13% SBS because it presented the best cohesion on the substrate, adhesion and “tackfication” among the others.
